20190121-Red-tailed Hawk - 1

Via volunteer Don: The Soarin’ Hawk rescue hotline received a call, reporting a hawk down at a home in Grant County outside of Marion, IN.  I met Morgan who reported that she came home and the hawk was in the driveway and walked/ran away instead of flying.  She placed a basket over it and kept it in the garage until I arrived.  Upon arrival I found an alert but quiet, mature red-tailed hawk with a droopy left wing.  The right wing appeared, felt, and moved normally.  The left wing was drooping, had a limited range of motion, and an abnormality could be felt along the ulna and radius (forearm).  He was also very thin with a keel score of 1.5.  He was placed in a transport box and taken to Pine Valley Veterinarian Clinic for further evaluation and treatment. 01/24/2019 This hawk was discovered to have an old fracture in his humerus.  His prognosis for eventual release is guarded.  He is being treated in our treatment facility. 02/02/2019 This hawk has been moved to our rehabilitation facility. 02/24/2019 This bird is still in our rehab facility, where he will gain strength and practice flying in preparation for his eventual release. 03/25/2019 This bird is still in our rehab facility, where he will gain strength and practice flying in preparation for his eventual release. 04/17/2019 This hawk has been determined to be non releasable due to his fractured wing. He has been moved to a volunteers home. They will work with him to make him more comfortable being handled . He will eventually be placed in another facility
