20160114-Red-tailed Hawk - Harvey
01142016-RTHA At 12:27 P.M. 1/14/2016, Lisa Yates phoned telling us we had an injured hawk at an Angola business, EMF. She provided the address, 505 Pokagon Trail and told us it appeared to have struck a window. Upon our arrival we found a Red-tailed Hawk on the ground, next to a window. We were met by the calling party, Linda Moddinger. The hawk appeared dazed and it's left eye was shut. I was able to walk around the bird and contain it. The wings, legs and wings appeared normal. The keel felt narrow to me. After securing the bird we obtained the necessary contact information from Dave who also made a donation to Soarin' Hawk. The hawk was transported to the clinic for evaluation. 01142016-RTHA Examination - The red tail hawk was much more alert and feisty than when picked up by our volunteer, Louie Lee. His weight was on the low end of normal, based on the amount of musculature on his keel (breastbone). His wings were normal (no fractures were palpated and he flapped them both normally). He had a strong, healthy grip with both feet. No obvious lacerations or areas of bruising were found (although with the extensive feathering, bruises can easily be missed). He held his left eye closed, but there were no obvious abnormalities with either globe (the eye itself). With everything else being normal, unfortunately he seems to be blind in both eyes. He was observed hitting a window, so the head trauma he suffered has left him blind. There is a chance, however, that his vision will return. We will keep him in a relatively small cage so he cannot hurt himself and hand feed him. He will be given plenty of time to see if he can recover enough to be released. Jan 23rd Happy to report that this red-tail is recovering quite well. Check out the latest picture and video. Should be released soon. Jan 18th Doing much better eating on his own now and swelling is going down a lot in his left eye. He was force fed for the first 2 days.
